California's June primary election is tomorrow and prospective voters are awash in ads.

The big spending this cycle, has made it's way north of Golden Gate, and if you've watched a video on YouTube lately, chances are you've gotten pretty familiar with Grow California's ads.

The political action committee has been spending heavily in state level races across California, and they've been going after Rohnert Park city council member and State Assembly District 12 candidate Jackie Elward.

"Mind you these are two billionaire crypto investors...who are pouring massive amount of billionaire money into this race to their organization Grow California because they think they can flip this traditionally progressive seat into...whatever they want," Elward said.

Elward, who immigrated to the United States from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and has strong support from organized labor, has become a target for Grow California attack ads.

The organization was founded by two Bay Area tech billionaires, Tim Draper, a venture capital investor; and Chris Larsen, co-founder of the tech company Ripple.

The group has flooded television and phone screens of District 12 residents in Marin and southern Sonoma County in recent weeks. The ads sensationalize Elward's vote to increase water rates in Rohnert Park to help pay for infrastructure upgrades.

The ads also imply she'll skyrocket the everyday cost of living for residents if elected.

"My constituent not just here in Rohnert Park, we have people all over AD 12, a lot of them got turned off by those attacks because one they were absolutely straight up lies," Elward said.

Grow California has spent over $700,000 dollars in attack ads against Elward. That's according to records from California's Secretary of State. It's part of broader campaign by business leaders to undercut the influence of labor unions in Sacramento.

Elward has been endorsed by groups including the California Federation of Labor and North Bay Labor Council.

As well as spending against Elward, Grow California has spent almost $300,000 since May 23rd on ads supporting Marin County Supervisor Eric Lucan for the Assembly District 12 seat.

In a statement to KRCB News, Lucan said the independent expenditures aren't authorized by any of the candidates, and while outside spending isn't new to politics, "the negative campaigning in our local race is unjust, personally hurtful, and does a disservice to our community," Lucan said.

Grow California did not respond to a request for comment.

Along with Lucan and Elward; Holli Thier, Eryn Cervantes, Eli Beckman, and Steve Schwartz are running for the open Assembly District 12 seat.
